The braai rule of thumb
Our butchers at NTN Centre work on 500 g of raw meat per adult for a normal mixed braai, and half that for kids. Bone-in cuts need extra weight. Want the full buying guide? Read The Perfect Braai Guide or see our fresh cuts.
How much meat per person for a braai?
Plan about 500 g of raw meat per adult for a normal mixed braai, 350 g for light eaters and up to 650 g for big appetites. Children under 12 eat about half an adult portion.
How much boerewors per person?
When wors is one of several meats, about 150 g per adult is enough. If wors is the main meat, plan 250–300 g per adult.
How many lamb chops per person?
Two to three chops per adult in a mixed braai (a chop is roughly 100–120 g raw). Serve three to four if chops are the star of the braai.
Why does chicken need more weight?
Braai chicken is bone-in, so about a quarter of the weight is bone. The calculator adds 25% to chicken and 20% to lamb ribs so everyone still gets a full portion.
